The Desenberg Event Center officially opened October of 2023.

1987

The final tenant of the Desenberg building before it became the Desenberg Event Center was Huntington National Bank. The bank occupied the building from 1987-2019.

1985

After the building was repurposed again, it became the Schau-Powell sporting goods store. This store remained in business until 1985 when it eventually shut down.

1950's

In the 1950s, the building was repurposed and became Hooker Glass & Paint Store. This store sold home improvement products and supplies such as paint, wallpaper, mirrors, and more.

Early 1900's

In the early 1900s, the building was bought by a wealthy German family. The family would renovate the Desenberg and continue its life as a store until WWI.

1886

The Desenberg building was built in 1886 to house the Desenberg Grocery Company. Legendary Chicago architect Louis Sullivan and his partner Dankmar Alder designed the building which is now the last remaining Sullivan structure in Michigan.

Trying to decide which wedding traditions will fit into your perfect day? Maybe something fresh and fun with a superstitious twist? Or old and timeless? Maybe even something sentimental? If you answered yes to any of these questions, there is a perfect tradition out there just for you.

Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue

This is one of the most popular and classic traditions around for brides to abide by on their special day. Each item symbolizes something different. Something old is typically an item gifted by a family member or future in law to show continuity. Something new shows optimism for your future as a new married couple. Something borrowed is supposed to be from a happily married family member in hopes that your marriage will be just as happy. Something blue stands for love and fidelity in your marriage. 

A Piece of Cake

Many brides and grooms tend to either save the top layer, or just a single piece of their wedding cake and freeze it to have again on their first wedding anniversary. This tradition is a great one to take time to reflect on your first year of marriage. 

Bouquet Toss

Though the bouquet toss is becoming less frequent, it  is still incredibly popular in many weddings. The flowers we hold are to symbolize happiness and love. When we toss it to single ladies, whoever catches it is said to be the next in line to get married. You’ll likely already have a bouquet anyway, so why not add a bouquet toss? 

Burying Bourbon

Although burying bourbon is usually a more southern tradition, it isn’t unheard of here and it’s a fun and exciting tradition. It’s said that leading up to the wedding, usually a month prior, you are supposed to bury bourbon at your ceremony venue and bury it upside down. This is supposed to prevent rain on your wedding day. Once the ceremony is over, you dig it back up and enjoy it! 

Some say wedding traditions are a little silly, or it adds to your already seamlessly endless list of wedding planning duties. But if it can make your day just a little more special, and give you peace of mind, maybe some traditions are worth keeping after all.
